How to Overcome
the Old Sinful
Nature!
Be renewed
in the spirit of your mind!
By Riqui Ricón*
He brought them out with silver and gold, and there was not one feeble person among their tribes. He
remembered his holy promise given to Abraham his servant. He brought out his
people with joy, his chosen ones with gladness. He gave them the lands of the
nations, and they inherited what others had worked
for, that they might obey his statutes
and keep his laws. Praise
the Lord! (Psalm
105:37, 42–45, NLT)
It is the Word of God, the Bible, that moves your Heavenly Father
to act on your behalf. He does not forget the promises He has made!
Then I heard a loud voice in heaven,
saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our
God and the authority of his
Christ have come, for the accuser of
our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our
God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of
their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.” (Revelation
12:10–11, ESV)
Victory over any distress, problem, or
sickness is obtained through the redemption
you received by the death
and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
This victory comes through your identity as a born-again child of God,
and by
declaring God’s Word over your circumstances.
Now then, to achieve
victory you need faith, you must believe God by
trusting His Word. And for this, the Bible, God’s Word
that never lies, teaches that you
must be transformed by the renewal of your mind so that you can discern that God’s will for your life is good,
pleasing, and perfect.
Do not be conformed
to this world, but be transformed by the renewing
of your mind, that by testing
you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and
acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2, NIV)
How is this done? How can you be transformed
by the renewal of your mind? By renewing your mind so it transforms your personality. Allow God to change
your lifestyle through a new way of thinking.
The only way to change
your thinking is to think differently. Your whole life you
were taught and trained to think like the world thinks. But now, you are no
longer of this world, and you are no longer the person you were before.
We were therefore buried with him
through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the
dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we
have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that
our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done
away with, that we should
no longer be slaves to sin—because anyone
who has died has been set
free from sin. (Romans 6:4–7, NIV)
You are a born-again child of God!
For you have been born again,
not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and
enduring word of God. (1 Peter 1:23, NIV)
A new birth has occurred
in you, which by its divine nature is not from a corruptible seed, but from the incorruptible seed that is the
eternal and infallible Word of
God.
This allows you to know and believe that you
are fully ready to change how you act and respond to circumstances. The old
self (angry, critical, bitter, resentful, fearful, defeated, sinful) that you once were, no longer
exists! God says so!
Change the way you think
about yourself. Stop seeing yourself
as you once did, and start
seeing yourself as God sees you. Look at yourself daily through the powerful
blood of Jesus Christ, who loved you and gave Himself for you. See yourself in
the mirror of Truth, which is the Bible, the Word of God.
Only a mind renewed by God’s Word can change
how you are and how you act. With a renewed mind, you can fully understand and
believe that if God blessed the people
of Israel with abundant prosperity and health because
He
remembered
His Word, how much greater
will the blessing
be for you, who have
received His Son Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of your life.
You are not just chosen
people; you are a beloved
child of God!
You were taught, with regard to your former
way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted
by its deceitful desires;
to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the
new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians
4:22–24, NIV)
This is the Gospel,
the Good News. Through the blood, death, and resurrection of Jesus,
you have been renewed and regenerated. You are no longer the same
person. You have been recreated according to God, in righteousness and holiness
of Truth!
Remember that Jesus is now the mediator
of a better covenant, established on better promises.
You might ask: Are we more blessed
than the people
of Israel? Absolutely! Scripture says:
Now if the ministry that brought
condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry
that brings righteousness! For what was glorious has no
glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. And if what was fading away
came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts! (2
Corinthians 3:7–11, NIV)
Renewing your mind means changing the way
you think. It means no longer thinking God is a tyrannical judge who will use
circumstances to teach you a lesson. Instead, begin to believe
what the Bible says: that He is good, that He
loves you so much He gave His Son rather than lose you, and that thanks to
Jesus, you are no longer a servant, but a child of the one true living God!
For God so loved the world that he
gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his
Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John
3:16–17, NIV)
There is a big difference between being chosen people and being a beloved
child of God.
See what great love the Father has
lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. (1
John 3:1, NIV)
Renewing
your mind means making the Bible the supreme authority
in your life. It means truly
believing it is God’s Word, reading and meditating on it constantly:
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105,
NIV)
Keep this Book of the
Law always on your lips;
meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do
everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua
1:8, NIV)
Only God’s Word has the power to change your thinking, making
you a born- again child of God. Only God’s Word has the power to lead
you to a prosperous, full, and abundant life.
They triumphed over him by the blood of the
Lamb and by the word of their testimony. (Revelation
12:11a, NIV)
Satan is a liar, a murderer, and the father
of lies from the beginning. His goal is to fill your thoughts with guilt and
condemnation because he knows that if he can affect your thinking, he can affect
your words and actions. But remember,
you have already overcome him by the blood of Jesus
and by the Word of your
God and Father.
So rejoice, heavens
and earth and all under them!
You cannot lose! You are a
born-again child of God! Just as the Bible says. Hallelujah!
Let’s pray out
loud:
Beloved Heavenly Father,
how wonderful it is to approach You today with full
assurance of faith. I know that I am a new creature, Your child, capable of
renewing my mind with Your Word and changing the way I am and behave. I am
convinced of Your great love for me. Therefore, I can declare with full
confidence that You, Holy Spirit, who are in
me and with me, are greater than any sickness, problem,
or adverse situation. Because Your Word says so, I know that in all things I am more than a
conqueror through Your love. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens
me. Lord Jesus, You are my Shepherd; I shall not want. You make me lie down in
green pastures; You lead me beside still waters. You restore my soul; You guide
me in paths of righteousness for Your name’s sake. Even though I walk through
the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.
Your rod and Your staff comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the
presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely
goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in
the sanctuary, in Your presence, forever. Because You died, my old nature, my
old self, died with You! Because You live, I also live! The eternal life You
possess is the same life You purchased for me. I can stop fearing death! Death
no longer reigns over me! Thank You, Lord Jesus! Now I can declare with
certainty: I am healed! I am free! I am prosperous! I am more than a conqueror!
I can do all things in Christ! I am joyful! I am a child of God! In Jesus’
name. Amen.
Be renewed
in the spirit of your mind!

Important Note:
How do I become a child of God? How can I establish a relationship with the
Almighty?
Just say the following prayer out loud,
putting all your attention and heart into what you are saying to God:
Lord Jesus, I believe that You are the Son of God. That You came
into this world, born of the virgin Mary, to pay for all my sins, and I have
been a sinner. That is why today I say to You: I do accept. I do accept Your
sacrifice on the cross! I do accept Your precious blood,
shed to the last drop out of love for me!
I open my heart and invite You to come in, because I want You, Lord Jesus, from this day forward
and forever, to be
my only and sufficient Savior,
my God, my King, and my Lord.
Thank You, Almighty God, because with this simple prayer and profession of
faith I have passed from death to Life; I have been transferred from darkness
into Your marvelous Light. Today I am Born Again!
God, now I am Your child! Now You are my
Father! I will never be alone
again! I will never live defeated
again. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Three Recommendations:
What just happened by you recognizing Jesus Christ as the Lord and
Savior of your life, according
to God's Word, is that you have been Born Again. No longer
as an ordinary human being, subject to the law of sin and death, but now as a
legitimate and authentic Child of God, Born Again, exactly like Jesus Christ, who is now your Older Brother. Therefore,
I give you these three, very important, recommendations:
1.
Pray. Praying is talking with God. So, find a quiet
place where you can begin talking to Him about everything. Do it out loud, and you will notice
how God always responds to your heart.
2.
Read and meditate
on the Word of God. The Bible is the Word of God, so get a Bible
and start reading
and meditating on it. How do you begin? It’s very simple. Depending on the day,
look up the reading program “The Bible in
One Year” and do the corresponding readings. You can get this program at: Through The Bible In One Year
(palabradehonor.org). You will notice that the program is set up so you can
print it as a booklet.
3.
In prayer with God, your Father, look for and join a
Christian church or congregation where the Word of God is taught based on the Good News, which are the Gospel of Jesus
Christ.

Revelations
12 And there appeared
a great wonder
in heaven; a woman clothed with the
sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve
stars:
2 And she being with child cried,
travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
3 And
there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads
and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
4 And his tail drew the
third part of the stars of heaven,
and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before
the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as
it was born.
5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of
iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where
she hath a place prepared
of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and
threescore days.
7 And there
was war in heaven: Michael
and his angels fought against
the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9 And the great
dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
10 And
I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and
the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren
is cast down, which accused
them before our God day and night.
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their
lives unto the death.
12 Therefore
rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he
knoweth that he hath but a short time.
13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth
the man child.
14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly
into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and
times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
15 And the serpent cast out of his
mouth water as a flood after the woman,
that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
16 And the earth helped
the woman, and the earth
opened her mouth,
and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
17 And the dragon was wroth with the
woman, and went to make war with the
remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony
of Jesus Christ.
Esther
2 After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus was appeased,
he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed
against her.
2 Then said the king's
servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair
young virgins sought for the king:
3 And let the king appoint officers
in all the provinces of his kingdom,
that they may gather together
all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hege the
king's chamberlain, keeper of
the women; and let their things for purification be given them:
4 And let the maiden
which pleaseth the king be queen instead
of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he
did so.
5 Now
in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;
6 Who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the
captivity which had been carried
away with Jeconiah
king of Judah,
whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.
7 And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther,
his uncle's daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the
maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were
dead, took for his own daughter.
8 So it came
to pass, when the king's
commandment and his decree was heard,
and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the
custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also unto the king's house, to the
custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.
9 And the maiden
pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her
things for purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven
maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king's house: and he preferred
her and her maids unto the best place of the house of
the women.
10 Esther had not shewed
her people nor her kindred:
for Mordecai had charged her that she should not shew
it.
11 And Mordecai
walked every day before
the court of the women's
house, to know how Esther did,
and what should become of her.
12 Now when every
maid's turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months,
according to the manner of the women,
(for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months
with oil of myrrh, and six
months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the
women;)
13 Then
thus came every maiden unto the king; whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house
of the women unto the king's house.
14 In
the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of
the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain, which kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except
the king delighted in her,
and that she were called by name.
15 Now when the turn
of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for
his daughter, was come to go in unto the king,
she required nothing
but what Hegai
the king's chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained
favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.
16 So
Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth,
in the seventh year of his reign.
17 And the king loved
Esther above all the women, and she obtained
grace and favour in his sight more
than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon
her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.
18 Then the king made a
great feast unto all his princes and his servants,
even Esther's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave
gifts, according to the state of the king.
19 And when the virgins
were gathered together
the second time, then
Mordecai sat in the king's gate.
20 Esther
had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she
was brought up with him.
21 In those days,
while Mordecai sat in the king's gate, two of the king's chamberlains, Bigthan
and Teresh, of those which kept the door, were wroth,
and sought to lay hands on the king Ahasuerus.
22 And the thing was known to Mordecai, who told it unto Esther
the queen; and Esther
certified the king thereof in Mordecai's name.
23 And when inquisition was made of the matter,
it was found out; therefore they were both hanged on a tree:
and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.
Psalm
105.26 He sent Moses his servant; and Aaron whom he had chosen.
27 They shewed
his signs among
them, and wonders
in the land of Ham.
28 He sent darkness, and made it dark; and they rebelled
not against his word.
29 He turned
their waters into blood, and slew their fish.
30 Their land brought forth frogs in abundance, in the chambers
of their kings.
31 He spake,
and there came divers sorts of flies,
and lice in all their coasts.
32 He gave them hail for rain, and flaming
fire in their land.
33
He
smote their vines
also and their
fig trees; and brake the trees of their
coasts.
34 He spake, and the locusts came, and caterpillers, and that without
number,
35
And did eat up all the herbs in their land, and devoured
the fruit of their
ground.

4 And let the maiden
which pleaseth the king be queen instead
of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he
did so.
5 Now
in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;
33
He
smote their vines
also and their
fig trees; and brake the trees of their
coasts.
34 He spake, and the locusts came, and caterpillers, and that without
number,
35
And did eat up all the herbs in their land, and devoured
the fruit of their
ground.
36 He smote also all the firstborn in their land, the chief
of all their strength.
37
He
brought them forth
also with silver
and gold: and there was not one feeble person among their tribes.
38 Egypt was glad when they departed: for the fear of them fell upon them.
39 He spread a cloud for a covering; and fire to give light in the night.
40
The people asked, and he brought
quails, and satisfied
them with the bread
of heaven.
41
He
opened the rock,
and the waters
gushed out; they ran in the dry places
like a river.
42 For he remembered his holy promise,
and Abraham his servant.
43 And he brought forth his people
with joy, and his chosen
with gladness:
44
And gave them the lands of the heathen:
and they inherited
the labour of the people;
45 That they might observe
his statutes, and keep his laws. Praise
ye the LORD.
